Leggings vs. Pants: When to Wear Each

Leggings vs. Pants: When to Wear Each

Both leggings and pants earn a permanent spot in a well-edited wardrobe. The trick is knowing when each one does its best work.

When Leggings Win

Leggings are the move for anything that requires ease of movement or a relaxed, low-effort feel. Running errands, a weekend coffee run, a yoga class, or a long travel day — leggings handle all of it without a second thought. Styled right, they can also pass as elevated casual. Faux leather leggings paired with a blouse and ankle boots? That reads as an actual outfit.

The key to making leggings look intentional: go longer on the top. Oversized knits, longline blazers, tunic-length tees, and flowy tops all balance the fitted silhouette. Keep shoes polished — ankle boots or clean sneakers — and the look lands.

When Pants Win

Pants bring structure that leggings can't replicate. A dinner reservation, a work meeting, a night out — these are pants moments. The fabric holds shape, the silhouette reads more polished, and the range of styles means you can dial up or down depending on the occasion.

Wide-leg trousers with a fitted top work for anything from brunch to a gallery opening. High-waisted straight-leg pants with a tucked blouse cover the business-casual range. Tailored palazzo pants with heels lean formal. Jeans technically fall in this camp too — and a great dark wash pair in a clean cut will do more work than almost any other bottom in your closet.

The Overlap

There's a middle ground where both work, and it mostly comes down to styling. If you're reaching for leggings but want to look more pulled together, elevate everything around them — structured outerwear, real shoes, a polished bag. If you want pants to feel as comfortable as leggings, go for a relaxed-fit or wide-leg style in a soft fabric like linen or ponte.

Browse all bottoms to find both — the right pair for whatever the day calls for.
