Buying swimwear online is harder than it should be. Returns are a pain, sizing varies wildly, and what looks great in a product photo doesn't always translate to real life. Here's what to actually look at before clicking buy.

1. Size Chart, Not Just S/M/L

Every brand sizes differently. Don't buy based on your usual size — check the brand's actual size chart with measurements. If you're between sizes, reviews often specify whether a style runs large or small.

2. Adjustable Straps or Ties

Adjustability is what makes a bikini work across different body proportions. Tie tops and adjustable straps let you customize the fit in a way that a fixed strap can't. If you're shopping for a supportive top, also check whether it has an underwire or shelf bra built in.

3. Fabric Weight and Stretch

Thinner fabrics can become transparent when wet. Look for descriptions like "double-lined" or "quick-dry" — these typically hold up better. Fabric with at least some spandex content will hold its shape after being wet repeatedly; 100% nylon often doesn't hold its color or shape as well over time.

4. Real Customer Photos

Product shots are styled perfectly under ideal lighting. Customer reviews with photos show what a piece actually looks like on real people in real light. Seek these out before committing.

5. Coverage Map

Pay attention to how the product describes coverage — cheeky, moderate, full coverage — and match that to what you actually want. The same style in "cheeky" versus "moderate" can look completely different on the same body.

6. Top and Bottom Sizing Separately

If a brand lets you buy separates, do it. Most people don't wear the same size on top and bottom. Matching sets look good in photos, but the flexibility of separates actually fits better.
